Ulrich Brauchle: Illustrative – an exhibition between line, surface, and color
With the exhibition Illustrative, the Ostalbkreis District Office in Aalen presents new works by the Ellwangen artist Ulrich Brauchle. From October 8 to December 31, 2026, pencil drawings, oil paintings, and oil pastel works come together in a concentrated presentation that invites slow observation and independent contemplation of the works.
Between Abstraction and Figuration
Ulrich Brauchle's imagery navigates between figurative suggestion, landscape experience, and open abstraction. Lines and color surfaces structure the pictorial space, while the picture carrier itself emerges as an active component of the composition. From this reduction, a visual language develops which unfolds its effect not through narrative abundance but through tension, rhythm, and precisely set forms.
The Drawing as the Origin of Painting
At the center of Brauchle's artistic practice is the line. In the pencil drawings, it appears immediate, probing, and at the same time resolute. The oil paintings and oil pastel works translate this drawing sensitivity into a colorful materiality. Surfaces, contours, and painterly strokes engage in an open dialogue that mediates between nature observation and abstract pictorial order.
Art Historical Context and Aesthetic Experience
The artist, born in Ellwangen in 1971, studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart as well as history, art history, and theology at the University of Tübingen. His works merge the tradition of landscape painting with a contemporary, increasingly abstracted approach to imagery. For his graphic works, Brauchle received the Felix Hollenberg Prize for Graphic Art. As a member of the Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg and as a lecturer at art academies, he also influences cultural education.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Artist Tours
The exhibition atmosphere at the Ostalbkreis District Office creates space for an immediate encounter with the originals. The art experience arises where seemingly simple forms unfold a complex spatial effect, and the aesthetic experience grows from attentive observation. Artist tours with Ulrich Brauchle will take place on November 19 and December 10, 2026, each at 5:30 PM.
Conclusion: Learning to See Through Art
Illustrative opens a quiet yet ambitious access to contemporary painting and drawing. Art enthusiasts can expect an exhibition about perception, concentration, and the creative force of line, surface, and color. Those who want to experience art in its materiality, spatial effect, and sensual presence should definitely visit this art experience live in Aalen.
